A chemical release often poses one of the most significant concerns to overcome when addressing the design of a blast resistant building.  Regretfully, the density of a release, along with it's direction are often unpredictable.  In addition, since many facilities process or store different chemicals that vary in composition and potentially irritating or lethal effects, the task of assessing the full range of risks is a daunting challenge. 

Therefore, unless you already have sensible data, we recommend that you consult a risk assessment expert who specializes in chemical releases. They will calculate prevailing winds relevant to the location of your blast resistant building, determine worst-case release scenarios, and report the range of risks you may encounter.  You can then make an educated decision on how best to protect building occupants.

As a person who may be charged with establishing a specification for a blast resistant building that may be subjected to chemical releases, it will be important to determine minimum and maximum occupancy, potential escape routes emergency evacuation plans.   You must then decide whether staff must remain at their posts under such conditions or attain access after an evaluation to execute critical process or equipment shutdown procedures.
