NEMA Type 1: (IP 10) Indoor use
Provides limited protection against small
amounts of falling dirt
NEMA Type 3: (IP 54) Outdoor use
Provides limited protection against rain, sleet,
windblown dust and external ice formation
NEMA Type 3R: (IP 14) Outdoor use
Provides limited protection against rain, sleet
and external ice formation
NEMA Type 4: (IP 56) Indoor or outdoor use
Provides protection against windblown dust and rain,
splashing or hose-down water and external ice formation
NEMA Type 4X: (IP 56) Indoor or outdoor use
Provides superior corrosion resistance and protection
(utilizing 316 stainless steel) against windblown dust
and rain, splashing or hose-down water and external
ice formation
NEMA Type 12: (IP 52) Indoor use
Provides protection against circulating dust,
falling dirt and non-corrosive liquids
NEMA Type 13: Indoor use
Provides limited protection against dust, sprayed
water, oil and non-corrosive liquids |
IEC Rating System
IEC Enclosure Ratings are based on a two digit numbering system as listed below.
The first digit indicates a degree of protection
against solid particles, and the second digit indicates a degree of
protection against liquids.
IP Number Designations
1st Digit - Solid Particles
0
- No protection
1 - Protection against large foreign bodies
2 - Protection against medium foreign bodies
3 - Protection against small foreign bodies
4 - Protection against granular foreign bodies
5 - Protection from deposit of dust
6 - Protection from access of dust
2nd Digit - Liquids
0 - No protection
1 - Protection against vertical dripping water
2 - Same as 1 above when tilted up to 15 degrees
3 - Protection against sprayed water at 60 degrees
4 - Protection against splashed water
5 - Protection against jetted water
6 - Protection against flooding
7 - Protection in dipped state
8 - Protection in submerged state
